Giving Day 2022

Giving Day // Open your heart and give

Open your heart and get involved Thursday 17 February. You never know when you or a loved one might need the help of your local hospital - show your support and donate to help those undergoing cancer treatment, provide comfort to palliative care patients or help make the hospital experience better for our youngest patients, like Kartia pictured below. Kartia is the face behind Brighter Lives Giving Day 2022. Kartia was just 10 days old when she was diagnosed at the Townsville University Hospital, with a severely narrowed aorta, which had brought its 8mm diameter down to just 2mm.

Kartia's mum, Jackie Hankin said without this surgery Kartia would have died within a week.

"To find out that your ten-day-old baby would die within the week without surgery is beyond terrifying,” said Jackie.

The Townsville University Hospital staff have provided ongoing treatments and scans to ensure Kartia's heart is still functioning at optimum health.

Now 12 years old, Kartia loves playing as many sports as possible and is this year enjoying her first year of high school.

"I enjoy doing all different sports, and thanks to my treatment I can do anything that normal kids do and enjoy having fun with friends", said Kartia.

Kartia's team is raising funds for Brighter Lives to support life-saving equipment for our local hospitals so patients like Kartia can get help when help is needed.
