Police celebrate contribution to kids with Cancer
The Queensland Police Service knows all about helping the community, but they make a very special contribution for local children with cancer. For the past two years QPS has supported the Townsville University Hospital’s paediatric oncology unit with $34,000 donated for this special cause.
Townsville Hospital Foundation CEO Tanya Busoli said “The support from QPS is helping patients and staff. We’ve already been able to purchase some equipment, including a wall-mounted television and DVD player that will help children undergoing procedures. This is a stressful time for children but distraction therapy has been proven to reduce anxiety in stressful times.
“We’ve also been able to purchase monitoring systems to assist staff delivering treatments and a training device to help staff develop special skills they need to help patients.”
QPS is planning their third annual ball to support Townsville Hospital Foundation towards the end of the year.
QPS spokesperson Inspector Roger Whyte said the money had been raised in the past two years from the Townsville Police District Christmas Charity Ball.
“It was so pleasing to hear about some of the new equipment that we’ve helped the unit bring in,” Inspector Whyte said.
“Policing is not just about locking up criminals, this plays a very large part of our job, but also there is need to assist our community in other ways.”
